Coaching Opportunity

Park Place is looking for a club coach.  This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in their advanced leader designation.  It is also a great opportunity to help a group of Toastmasters keep their club going.

Gavel Travel!

The Galloping-Gavel is a great way to get club members to visit other clubs.  I have added a log book to accompany the gavel.  I suspect that it is filling up quickly.  How far has the Gavel Traveled?

I encourage every club to use electronic methods for filing everything especially member lists.  If you are having problems using the online systems, let me know as early as possible, and I will attempt to help you.

I also encourage EVERY club to get a website.  Check out free toast host (SEE MISSING LINKS below), and the sites that have already been set up.  I won’t lie to you.  It is not trivial to set up a new web site, BUT you have all summer, and if you start now, you will be able to do a speech about your experience.  Will it have the pitfalls that make a great humorous speech?  Or the drama and frustration that make an excellent international speech?  You write the story.  I leave that up to you!

D42 is Distinguished!!!  You made it possible!!!  Congratulations, and thank you.

 With about 60 Toastmasters in one room at a TLI, I ran an exercise with the following question
What would make a new-member-prospect, not want to join?
We got 16 responses.  The top 6 are…
1.        Seeing no-shows for club duties (e.g. speaker or toastmaster or etc. does not arrive)
2.        Not welcomed when arrived (first time)
3.        Meeting poorly organized
4.        Getting/finding info from a website
5.        If they got special treatment during their first visit, their second (or third or etc.) visit has no one paying much attention to them
6.        Not really knowing what the club offers

If any of you have tips on how “to be so good we can not be ignored” please pass them on to me. My goal is to be an exceptional communicator and leader. (I sure need your help!!) These tips will become our Learning Labs of Excellence.

I have learned in working with families and individuals who are in crisis and feeling overwhelmed that all they want is to be heard. This calms them and helps them to think through what they need to do. I believe we will have more clubs and people wanting to be part of our “Team together 100%” when we hear them, understand them and respond to them effectively.

My purpose this year as District Governor is to have everyone I connect with (or who has connected with me) feel they have been heard. I expect you to tell me when I have not heard or understood you.  And if you are willing, I will do the same for you.

Learning Lab #1

How can we help one another and others to be heard and understood?  These are ideas for your consideration.

1. Talk one on one.  Be present with the person.  Paraphrase (reword what they have said) to be sure you understand what they are telling you.   

2. Reply immediately to an email you do not have time to respond to adequately.  State that you have received their email and will be in touch.  Give a time you will reply, especially if you are going to be away for a long period.

3. Allow people to be part of the solution.  As my daughter stated when she was in the hospital, “Help me problem solve; do not tell me what to do.”  A key skill companies are looking for in leaders is the ability to problem solve.  Individuals will take action when it is their idea or they choose an idea from possible solutions suggested to them.

4. Defuse a hot issue by talking face to face if at all possible.  Even voice-to-voice is more effective than email to defuse a difficult situation.

5. Ask “What is the best way I can support you at this time?”  When someone is upset stay calm, listen to them and respond so they feel heard.  You are not telling them what to do and they will feel heard.

Are you working on your Advanced Leader (AL)?

If you are working on your AL, then you should look into becoming next Area Governor in July of 2007.  Feel free to contact me when you are ready.

Those who have already earned the Competent Leader award under the previous requirements and who apply now for the Advanced Leader award will receive the new Advanced Leader Silver award

Are you a Competent Leader (CL) Yet?

This is the last year to earn a competent leader designation with the old (easy) criteria.  Should you use the old criteria or the new criteria?  There are two schools of thought on this.

1. Earn a CL with the OLD criteria to earn points toward DCP.  Your club could earn fourteen of them before the end of the grace period.
2. Earn a CL with the NEW criteria because it is actually a very comprehensive and well designed program.  You would need to really work hard to meet all the criteria, you might even be able to do all the projects in one year.

I recommend that you do BOTH.  The new CL is a great program, but get your easy points while you can.

For those of you that like short-lists, here are the abbreviated requirements for the Competent Leader designation.

Things I’ve learnedA Toastmaster’s membership ends at the semi-annual due date if they do NOT renew.  The “Toastmasters Year” is not in sync with the membership year.  The membership (half) year is from April to September and  October to March.  The Toastmasters year (including terms of office etc.) runs from July 1^st to June 30^th of the following year.  You can get more information on page 18 of Achieving Success as Vice President Membership  Thanks to Paul for asking the excellent question.  Thanks to David for helping me answer it.

NOMINATION DEADLINE FOR THE HELGI GOODMAN  COMMUNICATION AND LEADERSHIP AWARD IS NOON THURSDAY, APRIL 6, 2007

Each year Division B Toastmasters recognizes a non-Toastmaster who demonstrates, by example, the most essential quality of leadership: effective communication skills.

Your nominee can be a dynamic speaker, an inspirational speaker, a doer, a well-known person, an unknown but committed and dedicated person, a volunteer worker, an on-going contributor, a person in the news, or a long-term

contributor to the life of Southern Saskatchewan.

The Award will be presented at noon on Division B Day, April 14, 2007. The Award ceremony, along with other

Division B Day events, will be at the Room 218 at the Saskatchewan Legislature, in Regina.

There is NO official nomination form. All you need to do is write a biography (NO more than three pages, ONE page would be ideal) which provides the supporting information on why your club feels the nominee deserves recognition.

Please submit your nomination to the Division B Governor by noon Thursday, April 6, 2007.

AWARD CRITERIA FOR NOMINEES:

• Must be a resident of Southern Saskatchewan,

• Must NOT be a CURRENT member of a Toastmaster Club,

• Should have demonstrated, by example that the single most essential quality of leadership is effective communication.

INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS:

• Area Governors will distribute the background, award criteria, and presentation info to all clubs.

• This information will be placed on the Division B webpage.

• Clubs are to share this info to all members.

• Clubs will submit all nominations to the Division Governor by noon, Thursday, April 6, 2007.

• The actual nomination will be in the form of a biography of NO more than three pages. The biography will provide supporting information about why the club feels the nominee deserves recognition. A cover letter stating the name of the

nominee and providing contact information must accompany the nominating biography.

This calms them and helps them to think through what they need to do. I believe we will have more clubs and people wanting to be part of our “Team together 100%” when we hear them, understand them and respond to them effectively.

My purpose this year as District Governor is to have everyone I connect with (or who has connected with me) feel they have been heard. I expect you to tell me when I have not heard or understood you.  And if you are willing, I will do the same for you.

Learning Lab #1

How can we help one another and others to be heard and understood?  These are ideas for your consideration.

1. Talk one on one.  Be present with the person.  Paraphrase (reword what they have said) to be sure you understand what they are telling you.   

2. Reply immediately to an email you do not have time to respond to adequately.  State that you have received their email and will be in touch.  Give a time you will reply, especially if you are going to be away for a long period.

3. Allow people to be part of the solution.  As my daughter stated when she was in the hospital, “Help me problem solve; do not tell me what to do.”  A key skill companies are looking for in leaders is the ability to problem solve.  Individuals will take action when it is their idea or they choose an idea from possible solutions suggested to them.

4. Defuse a hot issue by talking face to face if at all possible.  Even voice-to-voice is more effective than email to defuse a difficult situation.

5. Ask “What is the best way I can support you at this time?”  When someone is upset stay calm, listen to them and respond so they feel heard.  You are not telling them what to do and they will feel heard.

Spring Convention:

Check the D42 website for the registration form and the information that is currently available.  The rate of $170.00 is good until the end of December then it goes up.  We are still attempting to get one “circus promoter” in every club.  That person will be sent information about the convention 2 weeks before it is released on the website.  They can use it to give speeches if they want or they can just pass it on through emails.  Their goal ultimately is to convince people to attend the convention.

Are you working on your Advanced Leader (AL)?

If you are working on your AL, then you should look into becoming next Area Governor in July of 2007.  Feel free to contact me when you are ready.

Those who have already earned the Competent Leader award under the previous requirements and who apply now for the Advanced Leader award will receive the new Advanced Leader Silver award

Are you a Competent Leader (CL) Yet?

This is the last year to earn a competent leader designation with the old (easy) criteria.  Should you use the old criteria or the new criteria?  There are two schools of thought on this.

1. Earn a CL with the OLD criteria to earn points toward DCP.  Your club could earn fourteen of them before the end of the grace period.
2. Earn a CL with the NEW criteria because it is actually a very comprehensive and well designed program.  You would need to really work hard to meet all the criteria, you might even be able to do all the projects in one year.

I recommend that you do BOTH.  The new CL is a great program, but get your easy points while you can.

• IF YOU PLAN ON COMPETING IN EITHER OF THE UPCOMING CONTESTS, DO NOT ANNOUNCE YOUR INTENTIONS TO BECOME AREA GOVERNOR UNTIL AFTER THE COMPETITION.
• You are welcome to ask me questions about being area governor.  I will share that information with you without assuming that you are interested in the position.

Club VisitsThank you for helping me get through the area visits.  We were done in two weeks. 

International speaking and Evaluation ContestFinally.  We ended up being bumped from our original spot (two days before I was going to announce the location) and we had to scramble to find a new spot.  We are at the South Leisure Centre (170 Sunset Drive).  We are running from 1:30 to 4:00 PM.  This is a joint contest with area 4 (again).  I understand that there will be more room at this venue.

is looking for a club coach.  This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in their advanced leader designation.  It is also a great opportunity to help a group of Toastmasters keep their club going. 

Gavel Travel!The Galloping-Gavel is a great way to get club members to visit other clubs.  I have added a log book to accompany the gavel.  I suspect that it is filling up quickly.  This is an opportunity to Get in on the Areas Working Together Contest.  How far has the Gavel gone?  This combines well with the Areas Working Together contest. 

TechnologyI encourage every club to use electronic methods for filing everything especially member lists.  If you are having problems using the online systems, let me know as early as possible, and I will attempt to help you. 

Thought of the DayWhy is it we never notice what has been done, but only what remains to be done? You don’t really do that.  If you did, you wouldn’t need a “to do” list.  If you ever think that no one notices what you’ve done, do something wrong.

If any of you have tips on how “to be so good we can not be ignored” please pass them on to me. My goal is to be an exceptional communicator and leader. (I sure need your help!!) These tips will become our Learning Labs of Excellence.

.Lunch A La Toast celebrated a success first half of our season on December 20 with a lunch supplied by Houston Pizza. Two visitors who attended a previous member recruitment meeting returned and are expected to join in the new year. The highlight of our fall season was the participation of new members from last year taking on meeting roles. Our club wishes all other Toastmasters a Merry Christmas and happy Holiday Season. Lunch A La Toast will meet on January 10, 2007 and then every second Wednesday after that in Room 209, Walter Scott Building, 3085 Albert Street, Regina at noon. Other Toastmasters and new members are welcome to attend.

This fall the Not-Just-Us Toastmasters club carried out a number of initiatives focused on building membership.  To begin with, we started the new season off by holding bi-weekly meetings throughout the summer, which was a new step for the club.  By holding summer meetings we kept the momentum and interest going for the members.  It gave us an opportunity to invite new guests to attend and observe a more informal Toastmasters session.  And as a result, we had 3 new members join the club in September.  Although the number of members that attended the 4 meetings was relatively low, we feel it was a success and will recommend to the next executive that summer meetings be continued in 2007. Other firsts for our club included formally voting in the new members, and having an induction ceremony to recognize and celebrate their new commitment to Toastmasters.  While these may be standard Toastmasters procedures, our club had not been carrying them out in the past.  The induction ceremony gives the current members an opportunity to officially welcome the new members to the club and to ‘pledge’ their support, and will help build awareness of the importance of gaining new members. Our V.P. of Public Relations, Debbie Walker, was extremely busy this summer and fall with various activities aimed at attracting new members.  Among other things, she developed a club website, spoke on community television, and distributed over 100 Toastmasters brochures to the Welcome Wagon community group, which will be given out to new
Regina residents. And finally, we carried out a fall membership drive, which we named “The Drive for Five” because our goal was to attract 5 new members to get our club to charter strength.  The members were divided into 2 teams and points were awarded for guest attendance, repeat attendance, and joining the club.  Prizes were awarded on a weekly basis for the 4 weeks that the campaign ran, and a grand prize will be awarded in January for the team with the highest points.  We had great success in attracting guests to the club, winding up with our Dec. 12th meeting with Mayor Pat Fiacco as guest speaker.  Over 40 non-Toastmasters attended that meeting alone.  We are hoping that the extra awareness the membership drive, and the Mayor’s visit has built, will result in new members joining Not-Just-Us when we begin our meetings again in January.

Park Place Toastmasters Club is happy to report that we have two new members who joined the club this fall.  Welcome to Ramona Furkert and Maureen Kurtz, both work with Saskatchewan Health.  Park Place Toastmasters Club will change its meeting schedule slightly for the month of January.  Due to the Christmas holiday season and the fact that January has five Wednesdays, the club will meet on the Wednesdays of January 10th and 24th.  In February we will return to our normal scheduled meeting days of every first and third Wednesday from noon to 1:00 pm in Board Room 1E1,

AREA 24:  The scenery changes only for the lead dog.Half Way HomeMy term as Area Governor is HALF OVER.  Or is it HALF STILL TO COME.  Or am I just right in the middle?  I’m not usually this indecisive.  Well, maybe I am. 

It’s 2007.  A whole new year.  Actually, just a whole new day (with a fresh calendar).  Actually, I discovered that some of my calendars were eighteen month calendars that are still good until June.  I’ll bet the calendar places have HUGE discounts in June!  The calendar publishers have erased a bit of the magic of new years.  New years are special, because if you don’t embrace the year and move on, your cheques come back stale-dated.  Of course, these days nobody writes cheques anymore.  Electronic banking has erased a bit more of the magic of the new year.  Fortunately, every day is an opportunity to start fresh and face the world with a better perspective than the day before.  Today is THE best day to make a change, no matter what day you read this. 

I could have filed this issue on New Years day, but if I had, I would have missed out on the announcement that the Areas Working Together contest deadline change.  The moral of the story?  Let’s try “Hard work pays off in the long run; procrastination pays off now.” Or perhaps “Good things come to those who wait.”  I can’t decide.  Thank you to everyone who contacted me, outraged.  I passed every complaint on to the planning committee, and it worked.  Does the squeaky wheel get the grease?  Of course, it does.  The squeaky wheel gets every wheel greased, whether they need it or not. 

I’m still looking for a replacement.  If you are thinking of taking on the challenge of Area Governor this July, ask me about it, BUT DON”T ANNOUNCE IT until after the D42 Convention.  The trick here is that if you decide to compete in any level of the speech contests, you could be disqualified if you’ve announced your intentions to be Area Governor.  If you happen to be the one who WINS the D42 Speech contests, you may be required to keep quiet about your intentions until the Region IV or international convention.  I believe in you. 

Club VisitsJust when I got finished, the next round is coming up.  Anyone with a preferred date, please let me know.  I will be looking for Club visits early THIS year.

If any of you have tips on how “to be so good we can not be ignored” please pass them on to me. My goal is to be an exceptional communicator and leader. (I sure need your help!!) These tips will become our Learning Labs of Excellence.

I have learned in working with families and individuals who are in crisis and feeling overwhelmed that all they want is to be heard. This calms them and helps them to think through what they need to do. I believe we will have more clubs and people wanting to be part of our “Team together 100%” when we hear them, understand them and respond to them effectively. 

My purpose this year as District Governor is to have everyone I connect with (or who has connected with me) feel they have been heard. I expect you to tell me when I have not heard or understood you.  And if you are willing, I will do the same for you.Learning Lab #1How can we help one another and others to be heard and understood?  These are ideas for your consideration. 1. Talk one on one.  Be present with the person.  Paraphrase (reword what they have said) to be sure you understand what they are telling you.    

2. Reply immediately to an email you do not have time to respond to adequately.  State that you have received their email and will be in touch.  Give a time you will reply, especially if you are going to be away for a long period.  

3. Allow people to be part of the solution.  As my daughter stated when she was in the hospital, “Help me problem solve; do not tell me what to do.”  A key skill companies are looking for in leaders is the ability to problem solve.  Individuals will take action when it is their idea or they choose an idea from possible solutions suggested to them. 

4. Defuse a hot issue by talking face to face if at all possible.  Even voice-to-voice is more effective than email to defuse a difficult situation. 5. Ask “What is the best way I can support you at this time?”  When someone is upset stay calm, listen to them and respond so they feel heard.  You are not telling them what to do and they will feel heard.

Spring Convention:Check the D42 website for the registration form and the information that is currently available.  The rate of $170.00 is good until the end of December then it goes up.  We are still attempting to get one “circus promoter” in every club.  That person will be sent information about the convention 2 weeks before it is released on the website.  They can use it to give speeches if they want or they can just pass it on through emails.  Their goal ultimately is to convince people to attend the convention.

• 􀁗 Have fun with it!
• 􀁗 Each Area is to work together as a team. Areas within a Division can challenge each other for bragging rights!
• 􀁗 Each club in the Area is to plan a guest meeting in December and/or January
• 􀁗 Clubs within an area are encouraged to assist each other by having members from another club in their area attend and participate in the guest meeting (a great opportunity to socialize and help each other out)
• 􀁗 Points will be assigned as follows:
• 􀂃 One point per club that holds a guest meeting in December and/or January
• 􀂃 One point per non-Toastmaster guest that attends the guest meeting
• 􀂃 Two points per guest that joins the club
• 􀂃 One point per Toastmaster from a fellow Area club that attends and participates in some capacity at the guest meeting (perhaps it’s someone talented at “closing the sale”)
• 􀁗 Points from each club will be tallied by the Area Governor (or their assistant) and submitted to the LGM at lgm@d42.org by February 2, 2007
• 􀁗 The points will be “averaged” by the LGM and tallied so that it is fair for Areas with fewer clubs

Are you working on your Advanced Leader (AL)?If you are working on your AL, then you should look into becoming next Area Governor in July of 2007.  Feel free to contact me when you are ready. 

Who is working on their Competent Leader (CL)?If you are working on your CL, check out the requirements for Projects 6 and 10!  Helping out with the upcoming contests will contribute towards earning your CL.We are looking for five Judges, two ballot counters, one Sergeant at Arms and two timers.  We are also looking for help organizing the contest.  Contact larry_gall@canadalife.com directly if you are interested. 

Are you a Competent Leader (CL) Yet?This is the last year to earn a competent leader designation with the old (easy) criteria.  Should you use the old criteria or the new criteria?  There are two schools of thought on this.

1. Earn a CL with the OLD criteria to earn points toward DCP.  Your club could earn fourteen of them before the end of the grace period.
2. Earn a CL with the NEW criteria because it is actually a very comprehensive and well designed program.  You would need to really work hard to meet all the criteria, you might even be able to do all the projects in one year.
