• Where/when/how often does your club meet? Do you have a schedule?
• If you come up with a title for your contribution, I will include it.
• Anything else you would like to report. I will look forward to any news, events, achievements, dates that you be taking a break, club contests, or anything else you want to share.

Coming SOON:
The Area Humorous Speaking and Table Topics contest will be held at 6:30 PM. on Thursday, October 5th at Faith Lutheran Church 370 McIntosh Street North (in Regina). We will be sharing the contest with area 33. We are charging $3 / person to cover costs. I believe that planning a contest counts towards the new Competent Leader designation. If anyone is interested in helping the next one let me know. I am also looking for a few volunteers roles.

AREA 24:
Club Visits
Things I need from you:
• What are your goals for the year (What level of Distinguished Club are you working toward?)?
• A schedule of how much a member pays should be present at every meeting. Do you prorate your membership fees? Do you subsidize? If a guest shows up at a meeting, and offers to join, I expect any member of the club to be able to tell them what amount to fill in on the cheque (even if the treasurer or the VP of Membership is not present).
• Guest packages are (should be) mandatory – even if it is a sticky note with a reminder of the next meeting. Every guest should have something that they take back with them. Hopefully, that information includes information about Toastmasters, your club and how to join.
• Each member should have goals for the year. Ask every member to set their own personal goal when they sign up. Goals can be anything such as ‘Contribute to every meeting’ or ‘Complete my DTM’.
• Each club officer should have goals for the year. Officers are responsible for the maintenance of the club, but it’s not a one-person-show. If every officer meets the goals they set, the club will thrive without putting too much stress on any one person.
Completed visits
• September 20th, 2006 – Noon – Park Place
• September 27th, 2006 – Noon – Lunch A La Toast
Upcoming visits
• October 19th, 2006 – 7:00 AM – Daybreakers
• October 31st, 2006 – Deadline to complete club visits.
Area Council Update:
The area council held their first meeting on Thursday, September 28th at noon.
• The decision was made to book future meetings if necessary (unanimous vote).
• The needs of the clubs were being met. The needs of the area were being met. Direct contact was the best way to keep the communication going. Feel free to contact (email, phone) your area governor, and I will feel free to contact you.
Who is the area Council?
Larry Gall (Area Governor)
David Barnard (Representing Daybreakers)
Suzanne Vindevoghel (Representing Speakers Corner)
If you want your club represented, please let me know!! I will add you to the list.
Coaching Opportunity
Park Place is looking for a club coach. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in their advanced leader designation. It is also a great opportunity to help a group of Toastmasters keep their club going.
Watch out for the Galloping-Gavel!
The Galloping Gavel has been located and will be back on the trail soon. The club that holds the gavel brings a contingent of at least three toastmasters to deliver the Gavel to another area 24 Club. That club will then look for another club to deliver the gavel to. I would like to continue the practice of the Galloping-Gavel as a way to encourage Toastmasters to visit other clubs in area 24. I will be adding a log of When it was delivered, what club it went to, what club it came from, who delivered it and who accepted it.
Technology
I encourage every club to use electronic methods for filing everything especially member lists. If you are having problems using the online systems, let me know as early as possible, and I will attempt to help you.
Thought of the Day
When I believe I can do something, then I acquire the ability to do it, even if I did not have the ability in the beginning.
Division B:
The Peter Francis Award (nominations will close on Tuesday, October 10.)
The award is for a Division B Toastmaster who demonstrates:
• The most essential quality of leadership is effective communication skills,
• Use of communication skills as an achiever or motivator, and
• A continued long-term contribution or a single profound individual effort involving a large number of people.
The eligible nominees:
• Are or have been a Division B Toastmaster,
• Resides in Division B,
• Has not been a recipient of the award previously, and
• Not a current District Officer, so the current Division Governor and Area Governors are NOT eligible.
The nominators do NOT fill out an official nomination form.
Instead nominators submit a no-more-than-three-page biography demonstrating the three items above.
The nominators submit the nominating biographies to their Area Governor.
Given the need for time to have the award engraved, the nominations will need to close on Tuesday, October 10.
This is the day after Thanksgiving, and this allows clubs three weekends to consider their nominees.
Check out the Division B Newsletter (The Beehive).
District 42:
Theme and Core Values
District Governor, Mona Cooley has asked me to pass this on to you.
PURPOSE Do things for the right reason
Mentor Others to see success
Also from Mona Cooley (Your District Governor)
If any of you have tips on how “to be so good we can not be ignored” please pass them on to me. My goal is to be an exceptional communicator and leader. (I sure need your help!!) These tips will become our Learning Labs of Excellence.
I have learned in working with families and individuals who are in crisis and feeling overwhelmed that all they want is to be heard. This calms them and helps them to think through what they need to do. I believe we will have more clubs and people wanting to be part of our “Team together 100%” when we hear them, understand them and respond to them effectively.
My purpose this year as District Governor is to have everyone I connect with (or who has connected with me) feel they have been heard. I expect you to tell me when I have not heard or understood you. And if you are willing, I will do the same for you.
Learning Lab #1
How can we help one another and others to be heard and understood? These are ideas for your consideration.
1. Talk one on one. Be present with the person. Paraphrase (reword what they have said) to be sure you understand what they are telling you.
2. Reply immediately to an email you do not have time to respond to adequately. State that you have received their email and will be in touch. Give a time you will reply, especially if you are going to be away for a long period.
3. Allow people to be part of the solution. As my daughter stated when she was in the hospital, “Help me problem solve; do not tell me what to do.” A key skill companies are looking for in leaders is the ability to problem solve. Individuals will take action when it is their idea or they choose an idea from possible solutions suggested to them.
4. Defuse a hot issue by talking face to face if at all possible. Even voice-to-voice is more effective than email to defuse a difficult situation.
5. Ask “What is the best way I can support you at this time?” When someone is upset stay calm, listen to them and respond so they feel heard. You are not telling them what to do and they will feel heard.

Education:
Are you working on your Advanced Leader (AL)?
If you are working on your AL, then you should look into becoming next Area Governor in July of 2007. Feel free to contact me when you are ready.
Who is working on their Competent Leader (CL)?
If you are working on your CL, check out the requirements for Projects 6 and 10! Helping out with the upcoming contests will contribute towards earning your CL.
We are looking for five Judges, two ballot counters, one Sergeant at Arms and two timers. We are also looking for help organizing the contest. Contact larry_gall@canadalife.com directly if you are interested.
Are you a Competent Leader (CL) Yet?
This is the last year to earn a competent leader designation with the old (easy) criteria. Should you use the old criteria or the new criteria? There are two schools of thought on this.
1. Earn a CL with the OLD criteria to earn points toward DCP. Your club could earn fourteen of them before the end of the grace period.
2. Earn a CL with the NEW criteria because it is actually a very comprehensive and well designed program. You would need to really work hard to meet all the criteria, you might even be able to do all the projects in one year.
I recommend that you do BOTH. The new CL is a great program, but get your easy points while you can.
For those of you that like short-lists, here are the abbreviated requirements for the Competent Leader designation.
